Songs I Love to Sing

Ой ходить сон коло вікон,
А дрімота — коло плота.
Питається сон дрімоти:
А де будем ночувати?

Де хатонька теплесенька,
Де дитина малесенька - 
Туди підем ночувати,
І дитину колисати.

Ой на кота та воркота,
На дитину та дрімота:
Котик буде воркотати,
Дитинонька буде спати.

This is a Ukrainian folk son, lullaby, "Sleep Walks Near Windows" (my translation), or "Dream Passes by the Windows" (on Wikipedia, the lyrics with a different ending), or Oi Khodyt Son Kolo Vikon (transliteration from Cyrillic script into latin).

My Translation into English:

(Maximally close to the original, without preserving the rhythm)

Sleep walks near windows,
And Somnolence by the raft.
The Sleep asks the Somnolence:
Where shall we overnight?

Where the little house is warm,
Where the child is tiny,
There we will stay the night,
Rocking the baby.

Come purring over the cat,
Come sleepiness over the child.
The kitty will be purring
The little baby will be sleeping.

Gershwin's Summertime

George Gershwin based his jazz standard "Summertime" (1935) for the opera "Porgy and Bess" after hearing this lullaby in the 1920s. Lyrics:

Summertime and the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich and your ma is good-lookin'
So hush, little baby, baby, don't you cry

One of these mornings, you're gonna rise up singin'
Then you'll spread your wings and you'll take to the sky
But 'til that mornin', there is nothin' can harm you
With Daddy and Mommy standing by
