General Nutritional Data

Nutrient

Nutrients, foods, and other elements.

Foods are composed chiefly of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, water, vitamins, and minerals. Carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and water represent virtually all the weight of food. Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins comprise 90% of the dry weight of foods.

Nutrients are component in foods that an organism uses for maintenance and growth.

Nutrition is the biochemical and physiological process by which an organism uses food to support its life. It includes ingestion, absorption, assimilation, biosynthesis, catabolism and excretion.

Complete nutrition requires food energy in the form of carbohydrate, fat, or protein, and ingestion and absorption of vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids from protein and essential fatty acids.
